The next step after cleansing in my skincare routine is BYOMA Hydrating Milky Toner. If youโve seen the coral bottle and wondered where it goes, the short answer is right after your face wash and before your serum or moisturizer.

What is BYOMA Hydrating Milky Toner?
BYOMA Hydrating Milky Toner is a fragrance-free face toner made to add a layer of hydration after cleansing. โMilkyโ describes its look and texture. It has a cloudy, lotion-like appearance and goes on before the thicker layers of your routine.
A few ingredients worth knowing are polyglutamic acid, a humectant that helps hold onto moisture, cica, which BYOMA includes for its soothing properties, and Ceramide NP, a lipid listed in the formula. If youโre looking at the different BYOMA toners, this is the one to look for if you want the hydrating formula.
When I say milky toner, Iโm talking about a product I leave on. I rinse off my face wash, then leave the toner in place and move on to the next step. That distinction is worth pointing out because there are milky cleansers, milky toners, and milky serums on the shelf. The word โmilkyโ can appear on all three bottles, but it tells you more about the texture than where the product goes.
If youโre looking at the ingredient list, you may also spot glycerin alongside polyglutamic acid. Both are humectants, which means they attract water. I find it easier to think about the purpose of each step than to memorize an entire ingredient list. This step is about adding hydration. If youโre shopping for something to exfoliate, look for a product specifically labeled for that purpose.
Where it fits in my routine
I use this as step two, right after cleansing. At night, that means after both parts of my double cleanse. If you want to see which two cleansers I use, I walk through them in Double Cleansing 101.
Hereโs the order Iโd use when adding this toner to a routine.
Morning: Cleanser โ milky toner โ moisturizer โ sunscreen.
Evening: Cleanse โ milky toner โ any serum or treatment you use that night โ moisturizer.
If a treatment has its own application instructions, follow those. You can keep the rest of your routine simple while you see how the toner fits.
The morning and evening versions can be a little different. In the morning, you might want as few layers as possible before sunscreen and makeup. At night, you might have more time to layer a serum or use a richer moisturizer. The toner can sit in the same spot in either version, even if the products that come after it change.
If you use a prescription or another treatment that needs to go directly on freshly cleansed skin, check its directions before adding toner to that routine. The American Academy of Dermatologyโs guide to layering skincare places medication or treatment immediately after cleansing. You can use the toner at another time of day if that makes your routine easier.
How to apply it
Once youโve rinsed off your cleanser, gently pat your skin dry. Pour a little toner into clean hands, then gently press it onto your skin. You can go straight in with your hands and skip the cotton pad.
BYOMA suggests applying it to clean, dry skin in the morning or at night and following with serum and moisturizer. You can find the full directions on the BYOMA product page.
If youโre new to this product, try it with the cleanser and moisturizer you already use. That gives you a better sense of what the toner adds on its own. If you change your face wash, toner, and moisturizer on the same day, itโs harder to tell which product you like or which one youโd leave out next time.
Start with a small amount in your palm and spread it between your hands before patting it on. Add a little more only if you need it to cover another area. One light layer is an easy starting point, especially if youโll be putting moisturizer and sunscreen on top.

Do you need a toner?
Toner is optional. If you like how your skin feels with your current cleanser and moisturizer, you can keep that routine. If you want an extra layer of hydration, a milky toner is one way to add it without rearranging all your other steps.
If youโre on the fence about buying it, think about what you want from that extra step. If itโs a light layer between cleansing and moisturizing, a milky toner makes sense to try. If you mainly want to cut down the number of bottles on your counter, this is an easy step to leave out. You can also keep it for evenings if you like a simpler morning routine.
Iโd also look at how much time I have and whether I enjoy applying it. A product can have ingredients Iโm interested in and still sit unused if I rarely feel like adding another layer. The easiest way to decide is to picture where it would go on a busy morning or a night when youโre ready for bed.
Quick questions about BYOMA Milky Toner
Can I use it morning and night? BYOMA lists both as options. If youโre adding it for the first time, choose the routine where itโs easiest to remember. You can decide later whether you want it in both. Iโd start by seeing whether I actually enjoy the step on an ordinary day, when I have the same amount of time I usually do.
Do I need a hydrating serum too? You can try the toner with your usual moisturizer first and decide how that combination feels. If you already have a serum you enjoy, you can layer it after the toner. If youโre shopping from scratch, you can start with one hydrating layer and see if itโs enough before buying another bottle.
Can I use it under makeup? You can put it on before your moisturizer and sunscreen, then do your makeup. If the combination feels heavy or starts to roll into little flakes when you blend foundation, try one change at a time. For example, use less toner on one morning or leave it out the next time and see how your usual products sit.
